There have been times when I’ve spotted a halfway-through construction project that gets completed and ready for the inauguration the next day.The revelation and digitization in the construction industry, specifically in the form of construction project management software, are now taking over large-scale construction projects. But it’s way more complicated than it seems to be.

Laborer delays, supply inefficiencies, or a lack of investment can cause construction projects to stop midway through. I raised this issue and interacted with my architect friend to uncover the potential of construction project management software and its role in automating takeoffs and maintaining efficiency. 

With his mentorship, I set about exploring the 7 best construction management software on my own. I explored key features like task management, requests for proposals, and bid management, which are the backbone of on-site construction operations. Let’s get into it!

7 best construction project management software that I recommend

My core focus was to delve into real and on-site construction operations and find a way to run those workflows online. Be it job costing, talent acquisition, outlining construction estimates, or creating requests for information (RFI), I searched for a way that stakeholders and contractors could collaborate and work on client pipelines.

It may happen at times that construction companies choose third-party project takeoff to interact with vendors or contractors and overlook bid management. But the real construction project is a recipe that has multiple ingredients, and cost estimation and material bidding are two intrinsic ones. Having said that, the following construction project management tools automate all workflows—from project takeoff to estimation to proposals to closeout—and ensure your network with reliable contractors throughout the process.

How did I find and evaluate the best construction project management software?

I spent weeks trying and testing various construction management software to understand the entire construction project lifecycle. I evaluated various business use cases and analyzed real-time user reviews to present the best options for informed decision-making.

 

My opinion does not just influence this list; it is a combined report of hundreds of real-time, industry-verified, and reputed G2 reviews given by authentic software buyers in the construction industry. I also considered AI to highlight features, pros and cons, and other parameters that are frequently mentioned among users.

 

In cases where I couldn't personally test a tool due to limited access, I consulted a professional with hands-on experience and validated their insights using verified G2 reviews. The screenshots featured in this article may be a mix of those captured during testing and ones obtained from the vendor's G2 page.

While collating this list, I remained mindful of the sentiments and experiences of professionals with hands-on experience in the construction industry and tried to deliver as much honest and unfiltered analysis as I could. These solutions have also been listed as top leaders in G2 and chronologically arranged based on the proprietary G2 score.

What makes a construction project management software worth it: my opinion

It is a fact that exploring construction project management software wasn't a regular thing for me. There were a bunch of services or features that didn't click in the first run, but as I got to solve real-world construction problems, they fell into proper places, like missing parts of a puzzle.

I also relearned that most on-site breakdowns and outages on a construction site are the result of basic mistakes and wrong decisions. Prior ideation and brainstorming on selecting relevant contractors or offering job training services can lead to a strong start and increased potential for a successful finish. 

To clear the air for construction project engineers and other contractors, I curated a list of intrinsic features that you can't miss out on. 

  • Building information management (BIM) software integration: Having an integration with BIM software helps you to design 3D models or build prototypes to estimate potential construction services and costs. I shortlisted tools that offer seamless integration with BIM software like Revit, Nevisworks, and Tekla to have step-wise documentation and designs that inform future cost estimations. I prioritized tools offering BIM features like model versioning, 3D mapping, clash detection, data visualization, and project collaboration with other stakeholders or even clients. 
  • Project cost estimation and takeoff automation: Your construction management tool needs to calculate cost estimates throughout the project lifecycle. I shortlisted vendors who offer automated workflows to calculate new estimations, add or modify budget details, and revise quotes. These tools are programmed with specialized algorithms that detect market fluctuations and update estimation workflows, so you always have a clearer picture of your expenses. 
  • Advance scheduling and critical path method (CPM) engine:  Project scheduling can make or break a construction project, which is why I shortlisted tools offering an integrated CPM engine to shortlist the quickest and most effective project plan to achieve minor and major milestones. Having a backdrop of project goals for every sub-department or use case of a project with CPM can expedite operations, highlight team struggles, and process the ad-hoc changes, all while predicting the fastest route to delivery and execution. 
  • RFI, submittals, and change order management system: In a construction project management tool, construction teams need to have clear interaction with contractors or vendors regarding design specifications, budget, job documents, or design estimates, which are listed in the request for information (RFI). Not only do these tools handle cost estimates, but they also handle RFIs, submittals, tender creation, and change orders to after quotes or prices and stay compliant with clients' needs at all times. 
  • Field management and real-time IoT integration: A construction project depends on the on-site operations and dedication of laborers. Even though I started out as an "outside-in" tester, gradually, I designed my own workflows, understood contractual obligations, and devised ways to pitch to new vendors and build efficient deals for construction businesses in my analysis.

Based on these interpretations, out of 40 tools, I shortlisted and evaluated 7 construction project management tools for you to supervise your hands-on operations and optimize architectural timelines.

1. Autodesk Construction Cloud

Autodesk Construction Cloud ensures a steady flow of all team tasks and projects, stores documentation, and monitors the entire arena of construction operations while maintaining legal and compliance policies.

Autodesk Construction Cloud brings everything, like design files, team coordination, and issue tracking, under one cloud-based roof. I can access projects anytime, review designs, and make real-time adjustments without worrying about manual errors or inefficiencies. 

The seamless integration of Revit and BIM 360 makes handling large-scale models much easier. I no longer have to deal with cumbersome file transfers between teams. Plus, the built-in issue tracking helps my team flag any error or give feedback to ensure everyone stays on the same page.

What I liked most about Autodesk is its ability to manage tedious construction documents, RFIs, submittals, and tenders. It also provides version control to prevent accidental overwrites and keep the documents up-to-date and fresh in content.

That said, there are areas where Autodesk needs some refinement. I have run into occasional performance issues, especially when handling large BIM models. Sometimes, the load can be painfully slow when trying to open an issue or access a construction model, which is frustrating when I am on a tight deadline.

While the platform offers a lot, I've noticed that certain functionalities of PlanGrid are missing, which increases manual intervention in some tasks and forces us to learn some functionalities on our own. 

Software stability is another challenge. Autodesk frequently rolls out updates, but some of them feel rushed, leading to occasional bugs that disrupt usability. It's a little annoying when an update breaks out in the middle of a process or task.

But, having said that, Autodesk Construction Cloud provides all must-have features and functionalities to remotely manage your labor-intensive operations, sub-contractor services, quotes, and job requirements, all from a single platform. 

What I like about Autodesk Construction Cloud:

  • I love the document management and distribution feature, which enabled transparency across teams in terms of project progress and updates. 
  • The integration with BIM tools like Revit, Build, and Takeoff made the entire project lifecycle so much easier for me as I could design plans and run estimations.

"What I enjoy most about the ACC is the collaboration between teams and software for projects. Some other key components are the ease with which we maintain the project team and the profiles around the project teams for access to models. What I dislike about Autodesk Construction Cloud :

Procore is a versatile building and construction management tool that integrates site designs, supervises site operations, monitors construction task progress, and ensures seamless collaboration and milestone completion.

If you have ever managed RFIs, submittals, budget tracking, and document management across multiple platforms, you know how chaotic it can get. For me, Procore integrates all the moving parts of the construction projects into one interface, making it easier to organize and supervise everything. 

One of the best things about Procore is how well it simplifies RFIs. Instead of dealing with email chains and lost paperwork, I can track, submit, and respond to RFIs all in one place. From my experience, the integration capabilities are a lifesaver, as they allow you to control various KPIs from one platform. 

It syncs with accounting software, scheduling tools, and even BIM models. That kind of connectivity makes collaboration seamless, whether I am in the office or on-site.

Even with the Procore mobile app, I can pull drawings, make updates, and communicate with my team without digging through stacks of paperwork. The software also gives me a clear breakdown of budgets, costs, and estimates to ensure that the real-time additions are well-documented.

To talk about the downsides, even though Procore offers workflow automation, it is a little bit of a task to set it up. 

If a process changes mid-project, adjusting things within Procore wasn't the most intuitive for me. I felt the tool could be better in advanced reporting and analytics functionality.

While the reports do generate critical insights, I still feel that it becomes a bit too complex for me to glance through all the terms and metrics and customize my report according to my project requirements.

However, Procore is an extremely intuitive, user-friendly, and well-designed construction project management tool that delivers on your expectations. 

What I like about Procore:

  • Procore evaluates my plate as a construction executive and structures it so that every team stakeholder is aware of my work and recent updates to optimize operations. 
  • I also appreciated Procore's free learning platform, which enabled me to earn free certifications and showcase my skills. 

What do G2 Users like about Procore:

"The ability to upload photos, access RFIs, and submittals by our team. This up-to-the-minute process allows us to keep each worker well informed of the daily process of translating and processing our drawings into a constructed building. But, to pit it one step forward into an actual reality."

What I dislike about Procore: 
  • It took me a good amount of time to type and list requirements such as entries, deliveries, inspections, timecards, etc., which delayed the project's deadline.
  • As I work mostly in Excel, I figured that Procore's configurability with additional tools wasn't smooth and needed more work.

3. Oracle Primavera 

Oracle Primavera is a cloud-based project management solution that regulates building maintenance, facility operations, portfolio management, and inventory management. It also maintains transparency with various key stakeholders in a construction project. 

When I first started using Oracle Primavera, I realized that it is an effective and time-saving tool for managing multiple complex projects with moving parts, listing dependencies, and monitoring resource allocation. 

One of the standout features that I love about Oracle Primavera is its scheduling accuracy. Unlike other tools that let you loosely define project timelines, it gives me complete control over project scheduling with its built-in critical path management (CPM) engine.

The software also allows me to do baseline tracking so I can compare actual progress against my planned schedule. Speaking of resources, it offers a robust resource management system that lets me assign and track manpower, materials, and financial costs in real time. 

It also integrates earned value management (EVM), which helps me track project performance and forecast budget overruns before they become a major issue.

While Primavera offers intensive and contextual project workflow automation, it also has some areas to improve. On the one hand, it is powerful with the integration of work breakdown structure (WBS), Gantt charts, and custom reporting options. On the other hand, the user interface felt a bit outdated compared to modern cloud-based solutions.

One more area where Primavera can improve is integration with third-party tools. While it does offer some level of integration through APIs, it is not as seamless as I'd like it to be. I have also noticed that performance can lag when handling very large datasets. Performance lag can lead to frustration during tight deadlines.

While Primavera does a great job with forecasting and analytics, it doesn't incorporate modern AI to streamline workflows or provide smart recommendations. Adding this feature can really be a game-changer for the tool during large-scale construction operations.

Overall, Primavera integrates project management methodologies and overlooks all functional and technical departments of your project to ensure client satisfaction.

What I like about Oracle Primavera:

  • I loved how Oracle Primavera helped me track, manage, and monitor multiple projects simultaneously, as well as help plan and manage resource allocation. 
  • It also helped me segment various parts of my projects into trades and design a specific WBS layout for each trade segment.

What I dislike about Oracle Primavera:

4. Oracle Aconex

Oracle Aconex provides legal compliance, risk management, and RFI services and integration with construction estimation tools to outline all your project requirements and calculate the total cost or expenses you might incur during purchases. 

One of the biggest wins for me was the document management system. Whether I am handling RFIs, contracts, or site drawings, everything is neatly stored and is accessible. 

It also offers smoother channels for online collaboration. Teams across different locations can easily share, review, and update documents without the typical back-and-forth chaos that usually happens in construction projects.

Aconex was also user-friendly and easy to navigate. Uploading and tracking project-related documents is a breeze, and they are analyzed and parsed into the right segments. The ability to link documents directly to workflows is a feature that I use all the time.

But, having said this, Aconex is not perfect. The user interface can definitely use some work. While the platform is relatively easy to use, there are areas where it feels outdated or unnecessarily complex.

I have had moments where I had to hunt for functions that should have been more intuitive. It also lacks a little in providing customization options, as I wasn't able to tailor the system to my unique project needs.

Also, there have been times when the system slows down significantly, especially while handling large files. I have also noticed that time management features are limited. Aconex does an okay job with project tracking, but for more detailed scheduling and reporting, I had to rely on external tools.

Overall, Oracle Aconex automates your takeoff proposal, builds great collaborations, and improves the timeline for your project goals. 

What I like about Oracle Aconex:

  • Having a centralized repository for all project-related documents made it easy for me to store, retrieve, modify, and share data with less effort. 
  • I loved the integration of customized reports regarding field insights, on-site progress, and BIM metrics, all under one roof.

Fieldwire by Hilti is a one-stop tool that provides job costing and job hiring services, evaluates pay cycles, and tracks project progress for you and your construction teams. 

I have been testing Fieldwire for a while now, and if there is one thing that stands out, it's how well it handles drawings, plans, and task management in the field. 

Whether I am working alone or with my crew on a large-scale construction site or working remotely, this tool helps me create accurate blueprints and reports in seconds.

One thing I genuinely appreciate is how simple and intuitive the user interface is, especially on mobile devices. It doesn't matter if I am in office or out on-site, all the updates sync seamlessly with the platform.

Speaking of syncing, the platform's cloud-based nature is an add-on that improves data efficiency and accessibility. I can easily make annotations on drawings, share them with my team, and ensure that the team is aligned on the latest changes.

That said, nothing is perfect, and Fieldwire does have its flaws. While it does an excellent job of handling the basics, certain customization limitations make the project too rigid. I have also found that the export and reporting functionalities lack a little and aren't as intuitive and smooth as I had hoped.

I also want to highlight the platform's speed, which feels a little slow at times. While it generally runs well, there have been instances where it gets slow, especially when handling large projects or multiple uploads. While Fieldwire is packed with features, you need a bit of training to uncover its true potential. 

What I like about Fieldwire by Hilti:

  • I loved how it provided up-to-date project data to my management teams, operatives, and client representatives. 
  • I use it mostly to take pictures on-site and edit them based on the designs and aerial images. It helps me to understand every location in detail.

"Great app to use in the field for basic site plan use during construction, with the ability to write notes, measure rough takeoffs, and add reminders for issues and things to refer back to at a later time. What I dislike about Fieldwire by Hilti:
  • I couldn't download the sheets from the app and save them as files or link them to other items unless I signed up for the paid version.

If you have ever struggled with large and complex 3D models, you know how frustrating it can be when software lags or crashes. Dalux handles massive models like a pro. Apart from ensuring project tracking and supervision, it loads your designs fast and enables you to integrate your system with other BIM tools.

Whether I am on-site or at my desk, I can zoom in on details, check for clash detection, and share updates without a headache.

If you manage construction projects, you would love its ability to handle task management and reporting. Instead of drowning in paperwork, I can log issues, assign tasks, and upload photos right from my phone. Everything is updated in real time, so the whole team stays on the same page.

While it does offer cutting-edge design features, the platform has some struggles. For instance, the lack of a calendar view in a Field is frustrating. Some workflows also feel a little rigid, and I cannot make detailed modifications to them.

I also found the file storage options a little limited. If you are used to Sharepoint, you might also feel a restriction in terms of file storage on this platform.

It's crucial to pay attention to subscription tiers as well. Dalux has some advanced integrations and customization features, but you might a different subscription for that which might be a problem if you operate on a tight budget. 

Overall, Dalux is the best tool for BIM-led project management. It helps you easily illustrate and visualize building designs.

What I like about Dalux:

  • I loved how easily and conveniently I could visualize my drawings and create 3D models for future construction initiatives. 
  • I also found the platform incredibly user-friendly and has an entire coverage for major project management functions.

One of the first things I noticed was how well it handled job costs. The software is designed to track every dollar spent on the project, from materials to labor, so that you stay within the limits of your budget. 

It also has a solid integration with ledger accounts, so every financial transaction is registered and calculated without any hindrance. One more thing I want to highlight is all these operations are handled pretty smoothly.

I was a bit skeptical at first, as construction accounting software isn't known for being user-friendly, but Deltek ComputerEase does a solid job of simplifying operations.

That said, I did encounter some potential drawbacks of the platform. I found that the reports were a little cumbersome, and sometimes, they could not offer the details I needed. 

If you are someone who works with plug-and-play tools, it will take you some time to tweak the settings and get the customization that you actually want. 

The software works well, but it lacks flexibility in some areas. If you need deep analytics or integrations with third-party apps, you need to spend more time on the platform.

I also saw some team members struggle a bit when navigating certain features, which means that the onboarding can take longer than expected.

That being said, Deltek ComputerEase allows you to monitor your cash operations and register cash transactions in general ledgers for a smooth and hassle-free experience and build more visibility in your construction operations.
