12 Best Free Writing Software I Tested (and Tips for You)

March 10, 2025

free writing software

I know writing can be hard. Or easy and fun. Or fun and hard.

Putting words on paper might seem straightforward, but putting them all together in the best sequence? That’s another story – probably one I don’t feel like writing.

Jokes aside, writing fulfills me, so I keep doing it. From writing articles every day to jotting down a to-do list, writing is a part of being human.

Over the years, I've seen writing change its forms many times. One of the biggest shifts was going digital. Novels, short stories, scripts, textbooks, research papers, and magazine articles: we can find everything online.

While nothing can replace the satisfaction of scribbling in my favorite notebook, I've found writing software solutions to be helpful in ways traditional methods can’t compete. The best part? It’s free!

Whether you’re looking for creative artificial intelligence (AI) writing tools or a simple note-taking platform, I'm sure this list of free writing software has something useful for your needs.

12 free writing software I like

For me, writing software enhances the writing process with insights and suggestions. I find some platforms to be really good for research, grammar, and tone checking, making them perfect for all kinds of drafts, including online articles, scripts, and books.

And free writing software isn’t limited to basic editing anymore;  it’s catching up fast to premium tools in both performance and satisfaction. According to G2 Data on AI writing software, users report high satisfaction with advanced features that shape how modern writers work. Grammar and sentence formatting lead the way at 90% satisfaction, followed by tone checking at 87% and style editing at 86%.

Even specialized features like plagiarism detection and citation finding score above 80%, showing just how far writing platforms have evolved beyond simple spell-checking.

These improvements make free and freemium tools not just convenient, but powerful enough for serious writing, whether you’re refining an article, polishing a script, or structuring a full-length book.

How did I find and evaluate these free writing tools?

It took me days to sign up and test each of these writing software, except for the ones I already use regularly. My goal was simple: figure out if each tool does what it claims, what types of writing it's best for, and whether they offer a free version you can try out. I checked out user reviews on G2 to see how these tools work for others and what challenges they face. Lastly, I also factored in G2's grid reports.

I also used AI to analyze G2 user reviews and understand common pain points, what people loved and hated, and whether these tools lived up to the hype.

In cases where I couldn’t personally test a tool due to limited access, I consulted a professional with hands-on experience and validated their insights using verified G2 reviews. The screenshots featured in this article may include those captured during testing and those obtained from the vendor’s G2 page.

What makes a writing tool great: My honest take

A writing tool helps you write, right? I used to think so, too. But from my experience, the best writing software does more than just help you put words on a page. The free writing tools I use regularly help me fix grammar issues, improve readability, have the right tonality, offer writing insights, and, best of all, are free.

If you're comparing free writing tools, here's what I'd suggest to keep in mind:

  • User interface: Wondering why I’m talking about the user interface? Trust me, the last thing you want when writing long articles is a cluttered user interface. I prefer tools with adjustable font sizes, customizable layouts, and a clean design.
  • Editing features: This is one of the main reasons I love writing tools. I'm not always paying attention to grammar mistakes when I’m doing free-flow writing from my research notes. The best writing software gives me real-time grammar and spelling suggestions, and some even come with extra plug-ins to improve readability and tone. And a few of them even have plagiarism checkers too!
  • Content organization: Most months, I’m writing eight to ten long-form articles, along with social media posts, email copy, and some short articles. Now, imagine not being able to find those documents when you need them—that’ll be my worst nightmare. Trust me on this: pick a writing software with folders and search functionality. You’ll thank me later!
  • Different writing formats: I enjoy trying out different writing tools for different tasks. Let’s be real—you can’t expect one writing platform to handle both email copy and long-form SEO articles perfectly. I mean, I don't expect that, at least. Bonus points for tools that come with pre-designed templates — such a time-saver!
  • Pricing: I’m not against paid tools, but when I’m testing, I stick to freemium tools and products with free trials. The free versions give you a feel for the basics while letting you check out the advanced features. Also, it’s a good idea to look for writing tools with community support, helpful tutorials, and regular updates.

Out of the 32 free writing tools I tried, these 12 stood out for their features, ease of use, specific use cases, and free trials. I used each tool while writing my regular articles throughout the month. I wrote a different article with each one, kept notes on how they performed, and compared them in terms of their capabilities.

The list below contains real user reviews. For context, the vendors that offer a free trial are also considered free. To be included on this list, a solution must:

  • Create AI-generated text to assist in some portion of the writing process
  • Suggest insights on improving the work
  • Present relevant resources intended to educate the writer
  • Correct grammatical errors
  • Create editable, text-based documents
  • Allow users to store multiple notes
  • Offer collaborative note-taking and note-sharing tools

1. aiseo.ai: Best for scaling AI-assisted content production

When using aiseo.ai, I noticed how it combines the power of AI and search engine optimization (SEO) data to generate copy. I find this writing tool to be ideal for bloggers, copywriters, and content marketers aspiring to rank high on Google and other search engines.

aiseo

I was impressed by the variety of free tools for title generation, article writing, paraphrasing, rewriting, and rewording. The software offers a free 7-day trial with 60 credits and access to all features.

According to G2 reviews I read, Aiseo.ai makes it easy to scale AI-assisted content production, especially for long-form and SEO-focused writing. The platform’s tone and readability controls help polish content efficiently and give writers flexibility across use cases.

While users generally appreciate the humanizer tool that rewrote AI content to sound more natural, some note that it could be refined to preserve sentence meaning more consistently. A few also mention that more customization options for writing styles and tone could make it even more versatile.

Even so, these are minor refinements in an otherwise strong tool, one that delivers structured, polished outputs quickly and reliably. With a G2 rating of 4.6/5, Aiseo.ai remains a solid choice for writers and teams who want to streamline their content creation process.

What I liked about aiseo.ai:

  • Ideal for scaling AI-assisted content production
  • Helps in improving readability

What G2 users like:

“I recently started using aiseo.ai, among several similar products, and I love them all! I think this is the only one with a readability improvement feature, and I really like it. It makes reading and understanding the text much easier and has helped me improve my writing. The other features are great too, but this is the feature that makes it stand out to me.”

- aiseo.ai Review, Kristen D.

What I dislike about aiseo.ai:
  • More customization options can make it better
  • The humanizer tool can be improved
What G2 users dislike:

“One potential downside of using an AI Content Detector is that it may not always be completely accurate. While the tool is designed to identify characteristics commonly found in machine-generated content, it’s possible that it may flag content as being potentially machine-generated even if it’s actually written by a human. This could lead to unnecessary revisions or changes to the content, which could be time-consuming and frustrating for the user.”

- aiseo.ai Review, Dadash V.

2. Anyword: Best for writing as copies and SEO content

I turn to Anyword to write copy that converts. With text personalization and robust predictive analytics, I can validate the potential of every message I create for my customers. In fact, Anyword has increased conversion rates by 30% for several clients. I also used Anyword's templates to generate content briefs, find data and statistics, and generate articles.

anyword

There’s a 7-day free trial available for new users, after which their access automatically converts to a free plan.

Based on G2 reviews, Anyword stands out for its ability to generate data-driven ad copy and SEO content that feels tailored to audience intent. It’s intuitive and performs well once you understand how to guide it with prompts. It is a strong contender among the top AI tools for business writing in the software industry, helping startups and B2B brands craft high-converting ad copy and email campaigns.

Reviewers appreciate that Anyword can produce consistently high-quality copy when prompted well, but they note the output may start to feel repetitive if you rely on the same prompt patterns, so experimentation helps keep results fresh.

Others like that the platform offers advanced capabilities for deeper optimization, though a few users point out that those features are limited to higher-tier plans, which can feel out of reach for smaller teams. For marketers focused on ad copy optimization and message testing, Anyword remains a strong performer.

With a G2 rating of 4.8/5, it’s highly recommended for content teams who want measurable results from their AI-assisted writing workflow.

What I liked about Anyword:

  • Best for writing ad copies and SEO content
  • Helps with brainstorming and creating tonality guidelines

What G2 users like:

“It does not distort the tone or messaging of what is already written. It just takes a draft and makes it more engaging and easy to read. It also helps that it offers multiple versions so users can pick which one best suits what they're looking for and then they can edit it even more. It can simultaneously process large volumes of texts such as long-read blog articles.”

- Anyword Review, Seun O

What I dislike about Anyword:
  • Pricing is one of the considerations
  • Need to experiment with prompts to keep content fresh
What G2 users dislike:

“It lacks several templates, such as meta descriptions, headlines, social media posts, conclusions, and templates for rewriting/rephrasing. These are the features that I would like to see added in the near future.”

- Anyword Review, Habib K.

3. Copy.ai: Best for social media posts  and product descriptions

I often turn to Copy.ai to generate content that’s more engaging and targeted and watch as it brings in faster and better results. I find this writing tool to be perfect for sales and marketing teams trying to drive copy that closes more deals. From digital ads to social media posts, I can write any form of content with this writing tool.

copy.ai

The free version allows unlimited writing projects with 90+ copywriting tools. You can also register for a free demo to understand how to make the most of your plan.

On the G2 reviews I read, Copy.ai is widely appreciated for its ease of use and versatility, helping writers and marketers quickly produce copy for social posts, product descriptions, and landing pages. It’s intuitive, fast, and especially useful for generating first drafts or creative variations.

While users generally find the platform dependable, some G2 reviewers mention that the generated copy can still benefit from a human touch, particularly when aiming for a nuanced tone or brand alignment.

According to G2 reviews, it's a strong pick for teams that want to speed up content creation, especially for marketing copy and quick drafts. That said, a few users note that repetitive or less-original outputs can pop up at times, so writers may need to refine and personalize the text to keep it authentic.

Even with these points, Copy.ai remains one of the most accessible and creative tools for generating content ideas and variations at scale. With a G2 rating of 4.7/5, it’s a great fit for teams who want to accelerate content creation without losing creative control.

What I liked about Copy.ai:

  • Suits writers looking to create social media posts and product descriptions
  • Lots of templates to help with content creation

What G2 users like best:

“The most important thing I like about Copy.ai is free credits. It helps me know about Copy.ai and AI generation. Also, the results are very satisfying, with many types of AI-generation word content for Facebook descriptions and YouTube title generation. The part I like the most is the landing page hero text; it greatly helps me.”

- Copy.ai Review, Kumaran R.

What I dislike about Copy.ai:
  • The copy may still need a human touch
  • May provide plagiarised content, as reported by several users on G2
What G2 users dislike:

“What I find is missing from this product is the ability to pull data from an existing website. I'm not interested in plagiarizing! I just mean facts or data listed on an informational website. I would like to pull specific information and then write commentary around it. Also, the grammar is bad (run-on sentences, switching from first to third person, etc.) I always need to run it through a grammar check software after. I would also love to see a feature like a script writer for creating video scripts.”

- Copy.ai Review, Kate A.

4. Evernote: Best for organization and focus

I like Evernote's ability to meet all my writing needs on a single platform. Whether I am scanning documents, taking extensive notes, or jotting down a list, Evernote manages it all.

evernote-1

You can get this free writing app for iOS, Android, Web, Windows, macOS, and Linux; it even has an offline mode. If you wish to upgrade to the paid professional plan, it comes with a free 30-day trial.

Inisghts from G2 reviews show that Evernote continues to be a favorite among writers and professionals who value structure, organization, and easy access to their notes across devices. Its tagging system, web clipper, and syncing capabilities make it especially useful for managing projects or research-heavy writing.

G2 reviewers say Evernote is great for keeping detailed, content-heavy notebooks organized, but users who rely on very large notebooks or lots of attachments might occasionally notice a bit of lag, especially during heavy use, even though everyday note-taking stays smooth for most people.

Others appreciate that the free plan still gives you a solid core note-taking experience, but users who want to store lots of files or build long-term archives may want to keep an eye on the storage limits, which is a pretty typical setup for productivity tools that save advanced capacity for paid tiers.

Even so, Evernote remains one of the most reliable tools for organizing ideas, planning content, and staying focused. With a G2 rating of 4.4/5, it’s a trusted choice for writers and teams who want a balance of simplicity, structure, and accessibility.

What I liked about Evernote:

  • Love how it syncs across all devices
  • Best for managing projects and task lists

What G2 users like:

“I have been using Evernote for a very long time, and I think the thing I like the most about it is that it just does such a good job of being both functional and fun. The user experience is clear and clean, I can search based on all kinds of tags, and there are many robust options for those times when I need more formatting than just basic headers and text.”

- Evernote Review, Sara C.

What I dislike about Evernote:
  • The app lags at times
  • The free version offers limited space for storing notes
What G2 users dislike:

“One thing I don't like is the way notes are managed. When you’re a beginner with few notes, it works very well, but for more advanced users with a lot of information, this management is very short.”

- Evernote Review, Jesus M.

5. Frase.io: Best for automatic content brief creation

When testing Frase.io, I liked its ability to optimize content for search engines in minutes, not hours. This all-inclusive free writing software provides everything from content briefs to analytics post publishing so I can create popular content.

Fraser

You can begin with a five-day (pretty much) free trial at only $1 and cancel your plan anytime you want.

From what I gathered on G2, Frase.io is a go-to tool for content strategists and SEO writers who want to research, brief, and optimize articles efficiently. Its AI-assisted topic research, SERP analysis, and outline creation features make it a favorite for researching and writing long-form content workflows.

Users often highlight Frase’s depth and accuracy for research-driven content, but those who import drafts from Google Docs might notice that some formatting or spacing needs a quick cleanup after transfer.

Reviewers also like how much the platform can do once you’re in it, though users who prefer a more modern, instantly intuitive UI may find there’s a small learning curve at first—most say it feels natural pretty quickly once you’ve spent a bit of time with it.

On the whole, Frase.io continues to stand out for its data-driven approach to content creation and SEO optimization. With a G2 rating of 4.8/5, it’s a strong pick for marketers and writers who want to create high-performing content backed by insights.

What I liked about Frase.io:

  • Best for automatic content brief creation
  • Lets you create content based on questions people ask on Quora and Google

What G2 users like:

“Frase.io is easy to use and gives you everything you need to create excellent content. I love how easy it’s to research competitors, find reference sources to use for blog posts, and create outlines and briefs. Most of all, their team is always looking to improve the product and takes customer feedback seriously.”

- Frase.io Review, Chris F.

What I dislike about Frase.io:
  • The UI can be improved
  • Formatting content copied from Google can take some time
What G2 users dislike:

“Too many updates and changes to the user interface. There should be a ‘use the old layout’ option. I'm used to getting what I need from the layout. It would be cool if you could connect SEMrush or Ahrefs to get the traffic data.”

- Frase.io Review, Marc P.

6. Grammarly Business: Best for grammar, editing, and AI assistance

I often use Grammarly Business for its advanced AI-powered features and distraction-free writing experience. It improves word choices, refines sentence tone, enhances content clarity, and fixes grammatical errors.

Grammarly-1

The free forever plan is available for all platforms and is accessible through your browser or the desktop app. You can also download it for Mac, iPhone, and other mobile devices.

Based on G2 reviews, Grammarly has become an essential tool for anyone looking to refine their writing with accuracy, tone awareness, and clarity. Its real-time grammar suggestions, AI rewrite options, and style feedback make it a trusted companion for writers, students, and professionals alike.

While most users find the feedback precise and contextually helpful, some G2 reviewers mention that certain writing suggestions can feel repetitive or unnecessary, especially for experienced writers who already follow formal structure.

Many users like having Grammarly’s suggestions readily available while they write with the floating icon, but Windows users who work on longer documents might find that the floating Grammarly icon occasionally gets in the way of their workspace, so they may need to reposition or minimize it as they edit.

Still, these are minor usability points in an otherwise polished and reliable platform. With a G2 rating of 4.7/5, Grammarly continues to be one of the best AI writing apps for professionals for improving grammar, tone, and overall readability across all types of content.

What I liked about Grammarly Business:

  • Great for fixing sentence structure and tonality issues
  • Helps you avoid wordiness and improves productivity

What G2 users like:

“Grammarly Business is the best to write content error-free. It has a grammar checker and a spell check feature that easily identifies errors. We can install Grammarly Extension in our Chromium or Chrome Browser, which can help all websites where we want to write the correct content. Even G2 uses this service to allow customers to write error-free reviews.”

- Grammarly Business Review, Devang S.

What I dislike about Grammarly Business:
  • Some writing suggestions may seem repetitive
  • The free version is limited and only covers the basics
What G2 users dislike:

“Sometimes, Grammarly may suggest corrections that are not necessary or even incorrect. This can frustrate users who rely on the software to catch errors.”

- Grammarly Business Review, Husnain M.

7. Google Workspace: Best for free online writing app

Google Workspace is powered by Google AI to create, connect, and collaborate. And when it comes to free word processors, Google Docs is the go-to answer for millions of users, including me. With a premade template gallery, I can create all kinds of content, including project proposals, meeting notes, and newsletters.

Google doc

Perfect for individuals or teams, users can sign up for Google Docs for free and get unlimited access to all features, including real-time collaboration and auto-save.

Feedback on G2 shows that Google Docs remains one of the recommendations for AI writing tools in office settings. Its features like real-time editing, commenting, version history and Gemini integration in Docs  make it ideal for writers who value seamless teamwork and cloud-based accessibility.

While users generally find its performance reliable, some G2 reviewers mention that Google Docs can slow down when working on longer documents with heavy formatting or illustrations, especially in shared files.

From what I read on the review, Docs is widely appreciated for being simple to start with and flexible for everyday writing, but users who want a bigger out-of-the-box library of free templates might find the native selection a bit limited so they may prefer to build their own templates or pull in options from add-ons when they need more variety.

Still, Google Docs continues to stand out for its accessibility, simplicity, and collaborative power. With a G2 rating of 4.6/5, it remains a top choice for writers, editors, and teams who want a dependable platform for real-time content creation.

What I liked about Google Workspace:

  • Best for collaborating with writers and editors in real time
  • Love how it works great both offline and online

What G2 users like:

“One of the things I appreciate is how easy it is to collaborate with other people in real time. Google Docs, for example, allows several people to edit the same document simultaneously, which is very useful for teamwork. In addition, having all the tools integrated into a single platform, such as Gmail, Google Drive, and Google Calendar, makes work much more efficient and organized.”

- Google Workspace Review, Luã Fhelyp G.

What I dislike about Google Workspace:
  • Can slow down when working on long documents with illustrations
  • A limited number of free templates
What G2 users dislike:

“One area that could be improved is integrating Google Workspace and other third-party applications. While many integrations are available, they’re not always seamless and can require manual work. Enhancing the integration capabilities would make connecting with other tools easier for my work.”

- Google Workspace Review, Alejandro D.

8. Peppertype.ai: Best for AI content for social posts and websites

What stood out to me about Peppertype.ai is its ability to learn from my writing style and make it more competitive so that it works best for my audience. It provides an intelligent text editor, an SEO assistant, and integrations that ensure your writing is free from grammatical errors.

Peppertype

New users can try this tool for seven days for free and enjoy unlimited access to all its features. Please note you can't access the free trial without a company email address.

My analysis of G2 reviews show that Peppertype.ai makes creating marketing copy quick and accessible, especially for teams working on social media posts, ads, or website content. Its template-driven design and simple interface make it easy to generate quality copy in seconds.

It is often praised for helping teams draft marketing content quickly in a clean, easy-to-navigate workspace, but users wanting more variation from repeated or very similar prompts might occasionally notice that a light re-prompting or human reshaping step can help keep things fresh. And while many users like how focused the platform is on writing, online sellers who want a more plug-and-play workflow might wish for direct e-commerce integrations to make creating and syncing product descriptions even smoother.

Even so, Peppertype.ai remains a reliable and practical content assistant for marketers who want to create engaging copy quickly. With a G2 rating of 4.6/5, it’s a dependable option for teams looking to scale consistent content production.

What I liked about Peppertype.ai:

  • Best for creating meaningful AI content for social posts and websites
  • The user interface is simple and easy to use

What G2 users like:

“I've used this tool to create countless pieces of content. It's really easy to use and is a great way to create high-quality content quickly. I've used it to create blog posts, ad copy, and Facebook posts. I love how it's written with a conversational tone that feels natural. And it's never written a line that my audience would find boring. I can literally create any type of content in seconds with Peppertype.ai. I've gotten content out the door in less than five minutes, which is great!”

- Peppertype.ai Review, Pallav B.

What I dislike about Peppertype.ai:
  • The content generated may lack variety
  • Lacks e-commerce integrations for easy product description writing
What G2 users dislike:

“Sometimes the input contents are not recognized correctly, and Peppertype returns the same input as output but takes the credits. They should not take the credit if they’re not rewriting anything.”

- Peppertype.ai Review, Md Farhanul I.

9. Rytr: Best for quickly creating copy or content variations

Rytr is another software I often use for writing. I like how it uses AI technology to create the best versions of written content. From social media captions and video ideas to business pitches and product descriptions, Rytr helps me make the most compelling copy for my projects.

rytr

The free forever plan supports more than 30 languages and has an inbuilt plagiarism checker for a seamless experience.

Users on G2 appreciate that Rytr is a lightweight, and easy-to-use AI writing tool without much setup. Its affordability and straightforward interface make it especially appealing for small teams and freelancers looking to produce quality content fast.

Rytr is frequently appreciated on G2 for being simple to pick up and flexible across lots of content types, but users wanting highly specific or more nuanced creative outputs might need to give it more detailed prompts to get the exact tone or angle they’re after. Reviewers also like how straightforward the experience is overall, though users who want a more robust in-app editing flow might wish the text editor had richer formatting tools or a cleaner, more advanced workspace for polishing longer drafts.

Still, Rytr’s overall usability, speed, and value for money make it a dependable tool for everyday writing tasks. With a G2 rating of 4.7/5, it’s a great choice for anyone who wants to create content efficiently without a steep learning curve.

What I liked about Rytr:

  • Ideal for quickly creating copy or content variations
  • Releases regular updates and features based on user feedback

What G2 users like:

“I've been using Rytr for a few months now, and I absolutely love it. It's incredibly intuitive and easy to use, and the quality of the content it generates is top-notch. I've tried other AI writing and editing tools before, but none compares to the speed, accuracy, and convenience that Rytr offers. It's definitely the best AI writing tool out there!”

- Rytr Review, Abdi A.

What I dislike about Rytr:
  • May need a detailed prompt to generate the response you need
  • Lacks a feature-rich text editor, which can be frustrating at times
What G2 users dislike:

“While AI writing can undoubtedly create exceptional quality content, its programming restricts it from offering truly creative or original ideas. Additionally, Rytr needs an internet connection to work optimally. If I’m in a region with slow or unreliable internet, it might be difficult for me to benefit from it.”

- Rytr Review, Chibuike U.

10. Scalenut: Best overall for article writing and optimization

I often rely on Scalenut when working on AI-generated content, content planning, and keyword research and it stands out as an AI writing software for content creation businesses, combining keyword strategy, clustering, and writing assistance into one workflow.

I love how this free writing program offers on-page and NLP recommendations to help you rank articles better.

scalenut

Try out Scalenut for free with a 7-day trial that comes with AI templates, an SEO editor, and search engine research page analysis functionalities.

From what I’ve seen in G2 user reviews, Scalenut stands out as a powerful AI-driven content and SEO platform that helps marketers plan, research, and optimize long-form content with data-backed precision. Many reviewers praise its keyword clustering, SEO scoring, and outline generation tools, which make it a favorite among writers focused on improving search performance and ranking potential.

Scalenut is often valued for packing a lot of functionality into one platform, but users who want to get the most out of every feature might want to plan for a little ramp-up time to explore the full toolkit, especially if they’re new to SEO content workflows.

Reviewers also like having SERP-based fact-checking built in, and users who rely on that feature heavily might find it helpful to do a quick context review alongside it, since a more refined, nuance-aware layer could make those insights even stronger.

Even so, Scalenut stands out for its ability to bridge AI writing and SEO strategy in one platform. With a G2 rating of 4.7/5, it’s a strong pick for content teams who want both creativity and analytical depth in their writing workflow.

What I liked about Scalenut:

  • Best for article writing and optimization
  • Has a user-friendly interface

What G2 users like:

“One of the standout features of Scalenut is its user-friendly interface. The platform is easy to navigate, and the reports generated by its tools are well-organized and straightforward. This makes it a great option for businesses that may not have much SEO experience. The platform offers tools for keyword research, content optimization, competitor analysis, backlink tracking, and more. After trying it for the first time, I realized it works great!”

- Scalenut Review, Teofil K.

What I dislike about Scalenut:
  • Takes time to learn all available features
  • SERP-based fact checks can be improved
What G2 users dislike:

“Customization. While Scalenut is designed to be easy to use, it may not offer the same level of customization or flexibility as other AI platforms. This may limit the ability of businesses to tailor the platform to their specific needs or integrate it with existing systems and workflows.”

- Scalenut Review, Yashel M.

11. Scrivener: Best for novel and fiction writing

While I don't often use Scrivener, I know many people who use this free script writing software, including self-published authors, screenwriters, non-fiction writers, and academics. They keep telling me how this platform makes creative writing effortless with integrated research, outline, and writing support.

Image: The ultimate creative writing tool

Also known for being one of the best book writing software tools, Scrivener supports footnotes, various text styles, and easy organization with its drag-and-drop function. Download the mobile app for iOS or the desktop version for Windows and macOS and get a free trial for 30 days (subject to use).

From what I’ve seen in G2 user reviews, Scrivener is highly regarded by authors and long-form writers who need a tool that can handle big, complex projects with structure and flexibility. Many writers mention how much they love its corkboard view, outlining tools, and built-in research folders — features that make organizing novels, screenplays, or multi-chapter documents feel much more manageable.

Scrivener is widely loved for giving writers deep control over long-form projects and complex organization, but users who want to tap into its more advanced outlining and structuring tools might want to set aside a little time up front to get comfortable with the workflow.

Reviewers also appreciate how flexible it can be, and users who care about very specific layout details might find it worth doing a quick formatting pass before final export, since the fine-tuning options can take a bit of hands-on adjustment.

Once you get familiar with its workflow, Scrivener becomes an incredibly efficient writing companion for large projects. With a G2 rating of 4.7/5, it remains one of the most trusted platforms for writers who want full control over structure and creative process.

What I liked about Scrivener:

  • Offers flexibility to organize, tag, re-organize, and print documents
  • Best for those looking for a fully featured tool for writing projects

What G2 users like:

“When I'm writing, I need to keep things as organized as possible, and Scrivener makes that not only possible but easy and efficient with its organizational tools. It allows me to create multiple folders, manage my writing and outlines, and research characters how I want. It's ideal for working on a long project like a novel.”

- Scrivener Review, Alex T.

What I dislike about Scrivener:
  • The learning curve can be a bit steep
  • The formatting options can be fussy and hard to fine-tune
What G2 users dislike:

“I wish using cloud services to sync your writing was a little more intuitive. If you have two devices open working on the same document, it's possible to save over changes without being able to get them back.”

- Scrivener Review, Sydney R.

Writesonic

New users can sign up for a free trial with their Google or Apple IDs or create a new account using their business email.

Writesonic is often praised by reviewers as one of the best AI writing tools for company blogs and social content, offering a mix of factual accuracy and AI-powered creativity. Users wanting to rely on advanced features might have to plan their budget, especially if they’re an individual creator or a small team.

Reviewers also like how quickly it can generate social captions, and users who care about a very specific brand voice might expect to do a light “human tone” polish on some captions so they feel perfectly on-brand.

Still, users agree that Writesonic delivers strong value overall, especially for those looking to speed up their content creation process while maintaining quality. With a G2 rating of 4.7/5, it remains a reliable choice for professionals who want both performance and flexibility in their AI writing workflow.

What I liked about Writesonic:

  • Best for creating, fact-checking, and proof-reading AI content
  • Helps with article research and optimization

What G2 users like:

“The options it offers with different tools. You can do literally whatever you need for your blog or social media ads. I like that it’s consistent with bullet points, subheadings, and everything else that really needs to be done.”

- Writesonic Review, Simon P.

What I dislike about Writesonic:
  • Cost might be a concern for individuals or small companies
  • Social media captions may lack a human touch
What G2 users dislike:

“The tool sometimes generates content that is not entirely accurate or relevant to the intended use case and may require manual editing or rewriting. Additionally, sometimes I faced technical issues with the platform's interface and functionality. While generating articles using the AI tools, I noticed that the same sentences are used repeatedly.”
