Small but mighty, the Twin Cities are shaping up to be a one-two tech punch.
With fewer than a million in combined population, Minneapolis and St. Paul have a vibrant and impressive tech ecosystem. Much like Paul Bunyan and Babe the Blue Ox, the Twin Cities make quite the superhuman team.
According to 2016’s documentary about the Minnesota tech ecosystem, “DocuMNtary,” Minnesota has a long history with computers, reaching all the way back to the late ‘40s. Control Data, based in Bloomington, MN, created the first supercomputers in the ‘60s. Given Minnesota’s long history with technology, it should come as no surprise that the tech scene is flourishing.
In fact, Twin Cities tech startups have made more than $7 billion (yes, with a “b”) with the closed sales of a few dozen tech companies over the past 10 years. (Which, of course, you won’t hear about much since Minnesotans are not prone to bragging.) Minneapolis and St. Paul are currently poised to become leaders in med tech, with 98 health tech startups raising more than $420 million in 2016 (got to offset all those Juicy Lucys somehow) and that’s definitely worth bragging about.
According to TechCrunch, Minneapolis has the second most start-ups in the Midwest founded since 2015 (behind Chicago, which has almost 10 times the population). According to the same article, Minneapolis is also second in tech funding (behind Chicago again). According to some, the Twin Cities startup scene is even more vibrant than Chicago’s, with packed startup events and mixers and lots of accelerator activity.
Note: Only software vendors on G2 Crowd with headquarters currently in the Twin Cities area are included in graph.
We have compiled data on the state of the Minneapolis/St. Paul B2B tech scene that includes all of the top-rated products on G2 Crowd which have parent companies headquartered in the Twin Cities area. Our list is ranked by user satisfaction of a company’s top-rated product. To qualify, a product was required to have at least 10 verified user reviews.
For each qualifying product, we created a company profile to recognize what that company is and does, as well as give a little insight into its history. The data relies on G2 Crowd’s more than 300,000 B2B software and services reviews, or from public data sources such as LinkedIn, Crunchbase or each vendor’s website.
