Were you one of the first Snapchat adopters, but looking back years later you really regret the username you chose?
I have some bad news, but then some good news. I’ll give you the bad news first.
You can not change your Snapchat username.
That’s right. The name you misguidedly chose years ago when you were impulsive and immature is not going anywhere. There is no button you can press that will allow you to edit it. “For security reasons,” Snapchat says.
Here’s the good news: there are workarounds.
How to change your Snapchat username (workaround)
- Tap on your bitmoji in the top left corner to go to your profile
- Click the gear icon in the top right corner
- Tap on the 'Name' field
- Add in your first and (if you want) last name
- Click 'Save.' Now your friends will see your name in most places, not your username
How to change your Snapchat username
Snapchat offers two ways to effectively change your username, even though technically you can’t. The first, outlined above, is by changing your display name. Your display name will appear in most places once you have one — so for the most part, friends won’t see your username unless they go directly to your profile.
|Tip: There's lots to do on Snapchat: learn how to unblock someone on Snapchat, and read more about Snapchat friends!|
If this will be enough for you, follow these steps to change your Snapchat display name. If you really need to rid yourself of the username, you can skip to deleting your Snapchat account and creating a new one.
TIP: Not the savviest Snapchat user? Don't worry, we have you covered on how to use Snapchat to it's full potential.
Change Snapchat display name
Changing your display name is simple, and you can always go back and change it whenever you want!
1. Go to your profile
Open your Snapchat app and click on your bitmoji in the top left corner.
2. Click the gear icon in the top-right corner
Now you are on your Snapchat profile, where you’ll see your Snap code, Snapchat score, and can view your Snapchat trophies. Click the gear icon in the top-right corner. It takes you to your Snapchat settings.
3. Tap the ‘Name’ field
In Settings, click on the 'Name' field, which will appear first. You'll notice a field named ‘Username’ directly below it. You can try tapping on that if you want, but it will only give you options to share the username via Airdrop, message, Twitter and more. It won’t have any editing options.
4. Add a Snapchat display name
You’ll see fields for your first and last name. You can make your display name whatever you want, and you don’t have to include a last name if you don’t want to. Just leave that field empty.
Your display name will appear in chats and stories instead of your username, so make sure it’s something you actually want people to see.
5. Click ‘Save’
Ta-da! Hit the back arrow in the top right corner to return to your profile. You should see your display name in bold text directly below your Snapchat code.
Create a new Snapchat account
It’s obnoxious to delete your entire account and start over, I know, but that’s the only way you can get a new username if you desperately need one. Unfortunately, your data can’t be transferred over when you create a new account. That means your friends, your conversations, your Snap streaks and your bitmoji will be lost when you delete your account.
If you don’t want to lose your friends, you’ll have to somehow record each of their usernames and then manually add them on your new account. The good news is you don’t have to delete your old account right away, so you could always look back at it if you run into any trouble finding your friends.
Tip: Here's how to delete your Snapchat account.
Still on board for this? Then let’s dive into how to create a new Snapchat account.
1. Go to your profile
Open your Snapchat app and click on your bitmoji in the top left corner. This will take you to your profile.
2. Click on the gear icon
The gear icon in the top right corner opens up your Settings.
3. Log out
Scroll all the way down in Settings and select the ‘Log out” option. It’s the very last item.
4. Click the blue ‘Sign Up’ button
Snapchat will guide you through account set-up when you create the new account.
5. Find your friends
Use the magnifying glass icon to search for friends to add. You’ll type in their usernames to find them.
Tip: If a lot of your Snapchat friends are also in your phone Contacts, you can sync your Contacts to Snapchat, which adds those friends in bulk! Big time-saver.
Enjoy your new Snapchat username!
Now that you changed your Snapchat username (or technically your display name), you can send and receive Snaps without any shame.
