Google just made its biggest acquisition play yet.
In a $32 billion all-cash transaction, the tech giant has agreed to buy Wiz, a New York-based cloud security company. Once the deal is complete, Wiz will become part of Google Cloud to improve its security services. First reported on Monday by The Wall Street Journal, this acquisition highlights Google Cloud’s focus on strengthening cloud security as more companies adopt AI and multi-cloud strategies.
Google’s $32 billion offer is a sharp jump from the $23 billion it reportedly proposed last year before antitrust concerns led Wiz to pause the deal.
On March 18, 2025, Alphabet, Google's parent company, announced it had signed a definitive agreement to acquire Wiz, Inc., a leading cloud security platform headquartered in New York, for $32 billion (£24.7 billion). The deal is pending regulatory review and, if approved, will mark Google's biggest acquisition yet.
In July 2024, CNBC reported that Wiz had turned down Google’s earlier $23 billion offer and informed employees of plans to go public instead.
However, with this new all-cash offer, Google Cloud is set to integrate Wiz’s AI-powered security solutions to strengthen its cybersecurity capabilities and detect and eliminate critical risks. This move positions Google Cloud to better compete in a rapidly growing industry driven by the rise of generative AI services like ChatGPT.
Several strategic factors drive Google's acquisition of Wiz:
With these strategic moves, Google aims to bolster its cloud services and address its customers' evolving security needs.
“Today, businesses and governments that run in the cloud are looking for even stronger security solutions, and greater choice in cloud computing providers. Together, Google Cloud and Wiz will turbocharge improved cloud security and the ability to use multiple clouds.”
Sundar Pichai
CEO, Google
While the price tag is jaw-dropping, this acquisition isn’t surprising based on G2 data. Wiz has seen extraordinary growth in the cloud security posture management (CSPM) category, with customer satisfaction scores consistently outpacing competitors.
Wiz’s rapid growth and strong industry reputation make it a valuable asset, justifying Google’s premium investment in the company.
“Google's persistence in acquiring Wiz is notable and reflective of a real demand for multi-cloud security solutions. It also signals continuing market demands for unified security platforms.”

The acquisition comes as organizations struggle with security challenges across multi-cloud environments. G2's latest Buyer Behavior Report shows that 48% of software buyers go ahead with purchases without conducting proper security vetting, and 28% skirt assessments because of timely business needs.
In the age of AI, where moving fast is paramount to remaining competitive, this is likely only going to make security a larger challenge.
Google has made several significant investments in cybersecurity over the years to enhance its security offerings and protect its users. Notable investments include:
These investments reflect Google's ongoing commitment to advancing cybersecurity and protecting its users and clients in an increasingly digital world.
The acquisition of Wiz strengthens Google’s ability to compete with Microsoft and Amazon in the cloud security market in several ways:
Google Cloud has traditionally trailed behind AWS and Azure in market share, partly due to security concerns among large enterprises. By acquiring Wiz, Google strengthens its security reputation, addressing a major factor in enterprise cloud adoption decisions. This could drive more customers to choose Google Cloud over its competitors, boosting its growth in the cloud computing space.
Did you know? Alphabet Inc. saw its shares rise by 0.07% in pre-market trading, reaching $164.34 at 9:12 a.m. EDT, up from $164.29 at the previous U.S. market close.
The Google-Wiz deal isn't just a step to improve Google's cloud security capabilities with AI-powered threat detection and multi-cloud protection. It is also a step to position Google Cloud as a solid competitor for AWS and Microsoft and attract enterprises that prioritize cybersecurity. However, regulatory scrutiny may slow the deal’s final approval. If successful, Google Cloud could gain significant market share using Wiz’s expertise to offer advanced security solutions.
Also, as AI-driven threats rise, this acquisition signals Google’s commitment to staying ahead in cybersecurity, setting the stage for innovation and increased competition in the cloud security industry.
